Mentor Program

(Nine-month commitment, September through May)

Program Description: The Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) is launching a mentoring program which combines e-mentoring and one-on-one mentoring styles.  The mission of the Pittsburgh AMA Mentor Program is to connect college students (marketing majors) with marketing executives for the purpose of supporting, guiding, and encouraging these juniors and seniors as they transition from school to career.  In cooperation with the Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern PA, training will be provided to mentors, giving them the necessary tools to develop a positive relationship with students (mentees).

Position Description: Mentors serve as part of a team from the Pittsburgh AMA membership that works together to take responsibility for one student from one of four area schools:  Duquesne University, Point Park University, Chatham University, or Pittsburgh Technical Institute.  Mentors commit to spend nine months of consistent weekly time being an adult friend and role model to a college junior or senior (mentee).  Mentors invest their time listening, building trust, and establishing a relationship that encourages the mentee to make the most of their college experience prior to moving into a career.

Responsibilities/Commitment:

Pittsburgh AMA mentors participate in the following areas:

  • Regular electronic communication with mentee (via email or social media)
  • Monthly face-to-face or phone meeting with mentee
  • Attend free mentor training (including one full-day pre-service training and one evening in-service training.  Provided at The Mentoring Partnership of SWPA)
  • Attend two mentor/mentee group meetings (October, 2011 kick-off and May, 2012 closing)

Supervision/Support Schedule:

  • Monthly phone meetings with program coordinator;
  • Bi-annual goal-setting meeting with youth and program coordinator.
